AVAAZ G8

Virtual democracy is the way to change hearts and minds

People & Planet is the largest, student network in Britain campaigning to end world poverty, defend human rights and protect the environment.

Avaaz.org is a new global online advocacy community that brings people-powered politics to international decision-making. Its mission is to use the tools of online campaigning to help ensure that the views and values of the world’s peoples shape the policies that govern them.

The project will build a massive global online petition urging action on climate change at the G8 summit and deliver it to the leaders at the G8. At the last UN meeting in Bali, Japan (this year’s G8 President) showed signs of wrestling with the concept of signing up to the binding targets that science tells us are necessary for post 2012. In the light of this the project will mobilize the full global Avaaz network of 3 million people to spread the petition in Japan and organise a visual stunt that can illustrate to leaders and press the intensity of the global call for action.

"For Japan, we hope to mobilize the full global Avaaz network of 3 million people to spread the petition. We are delighted to have been given funding by Artists Project Earth which will help make this campaign possible. Together, we can illustrate to leaders and press the intensity of the global call for action on climate change." Avaaz
