Through its music and art projects APE,  will be raising financial support to local communities who are most affected by disasters such as:
Kashmir Earthquake
This devastating and deadly earthquake hit the mountainous region of Pakistan-administered Kashmir in October 2005, killing more than 87,000 people and injuring over 100,000 more. The degree of destruction forced between 2.5 million and 3.5 million people to try to survive the winter in emergency shelters in camps across the region. Now, more than 7 months later, as the summer approaches and those displaced try to return to what is left of their homes, the international community faces a new set of challenges. With only $381 million of the necessary $550 million having been donated, the task ahead is daunting. Many of those who have lost their homes are unable to return for fears of landslides or flooding, and many sites still need the rubble of the previous structures to be cleared. The current predictions are that 100,000 people will still be living in tents by the time winter comes again. Without basic infrastructure, in particular sanitation, peoples' living conditions in these areas are terrible, and the threat of the spread of disease is ever-present.

Hurricane Katrina

Even though the water has long since receded, the devastation of Hurricane Katrina remains. Killing 1,836 people and causing $75 billion worth of damage, this hurricane has not only had a huge impact on the American psyche, but also on those whose lives continue to be affected by the destruction Katrina caused. For example, the Red Cross continues to provide meals for more than 100,000 people each day.

To date, agencies have directly assisted more than 10,000 hurricane survivors. Mobile distribution units distributed relief supplies throughout southeastern Louisiana and as a result, fed hundreds of evacuees, provided clothing and necessary hygiene items, comforted displaced children by distributing hundreds of teddy bears, and assisted communities with their clean-up.

With the emergency phase of the disaster over, the needs of those affected has transitioned into the reconstruction phase, APE designated agencies will be assessing long-term projects such as permanent shelter and youth centre construction, educational assistance, and coordinating projects that restore people's ability to provide for themselves.

While communities are already working to restore their lives and what was lost, they have a long way to go. Hurricane Katrina has long since faded from the news media, but the survivors still need your help to get back on their feet.

Indian Ocean Tsunami
Minhaz Haque (15 years old) battered by the rain after tsunami, near his destroyed house near the sea. He says, There is nothing left of his house. Not even the foundation. It ís like there was no house here ever.

In Sri Lanka, more than 7,500 fishermen have been killed by the tsunami and over 5,600 are still missing. More than 5,000 Sri Lankan fishing families have been displaced and 80 percent of coastal fishing vessels have been completely destroyed or very seriously damaged, including around 19,000 boats. Ten out of the 12 main fishing harbours in the country have been completely devastated including infrastructure such as ice plants, cold rooms, workshops and slipways.

FAO has already sent fisheries experts to Sri Lanka to advise the government on the repair and rehabilitation of fishing harbours and infrastructure, fishing boats and fishing gear.

In the Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province of Indonesia, where 42,000 fishermen and their families live, 70 percent of the small-scale fishing fleet have been destroyed. In Nias Island, about 800 fishing canoes have been destroyed. Two thirds of local fishermen from the capital Banda Aceh were killed by the waves.

Fish farming was severely affected in northern Sumatra with about 1,000 fish cage farms having been completely destroyed.

Java Earthquake
Java Earthquake

In the latest of these horrific natural disasters, a large earthquake hit the Indonesian island of Java in May 2006, almost completely destroying parts of the southern area of Yogyakarta and killing as many as 6,200 people. The number of survivors seeking medical treatment has overwhelmed local hospitals, and a number of mobile clinics and field hospitals have sprung up to try to help the injured, but they are struggling to meet demand and, with an estimated 200,000 people having been displaced, few of those treated have a home to return to.

The physical damage done to the infrastructure of this Indonesian province, which was still suffering the affects of the 2004 earthquake and tsunami, will take months to repair. The total cost of reconstruction is, as yet, unknown, but it has been estimated that simply meeting the region's urgent needs will cost $103 million.

The relief process is gathering pace as international aid has started to arrive, but much more needs to be done, and the distribution of the necessary supplies has been hampered by poor weather and damaged roads. On top of which, nearby Mount Merapi has started showing signs of growing volcanic activity, forcing the Indonesian government to begin evacuating the immediate area.

The need of those affected is great, and once the immediate medical emergency subsides, clean water, sanitation, and access to food will become paramount as these people try to rebuild their lives.
