KINGSNORTH CLIMATE ACTION

A centre for climate action

The purpose of the project is to facilitate and support a campaign of direct action against the construction of a new coal fired power station in Kingsnorth. A building (or series of buildings) located in either Strood, Rochester or Gillingham will be run as a social centre.

Using activities such as film screenings, public meetings, discussions, practical workshops and direct action training, the social centre will provide a focal point to engage local people in the campaign and support people in taking action. The outcome will be to send a clear message that there will be a sustained campaign of direct action targeting any new coal fired power stations. The centre will also demonstrate and raise awareness of sustainable alternatives and act as a springboard to setting up a permanent protest camp on land near Kingsnorth should it be required.

STOP PRESS

Wednesday, 7 October 2009: Climate activists celebrated victory against carbon intensive coal power, as energy company E.ON announced they were indefinitely delaying building the Kingsnorth power station in Kent. The Camp for Climate Action targeted the Kingsnorth site in August 2008 1 as coal is one of the most environmentally destructive ways of generating Electricity.
