This year, Artists Project Earth are celebrating World Environment Day by releasing ‘Rhythms Del Mundo: Rio +20’ linking the great work going on during World Environment Day with the forthcoming Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro later in the month. The album includes previously unreleased tracks such as “John & Yoko’ by Rokia Traore and ‘Rhythms of the Earth’ featuring Xavier Rudd, plus a Cuban remix of the track ‘Spirit of the Forest’ – featuring Kate Bush, Mick Fleetwood, Lenny Kravitz, Gilberto Gil, Ringo Starr, Donna Summer, David Gilmore, Debbie Harry, Iggy Pop, Joni Mitchell, the B-52’s, Bryan Wilson and the Beach Boys – which was originally released at the first Earth Summit twenty years ago. (See below for full track listing.)
Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and celebrated annually on 5 June, World Environment Day (WED) is the UN’s flagship day for environmental outreach. It is the people’s day for positive action on behalf of the environment. Mobilizing millions of people globally, World Environment Day demonstrates how individual actions to nurture the environment have an exponential impact. World Environment Day is not just a day, but a movement, enabling our voices, dreams and practical successes to be heard and seen at the highest levels.
2012 marks the 40th anniversary of the United Nations Environment Programme and twenty years since the first UN Conference on Sustainable Development (known as the Earth Summit) in Brazil. This year, world leaders will again meet at Rio+20 to take stock of the progress, and failings, of those outcomes. One of the overarching themes is a Green Economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication. Delegates will be addressing the question: is there a smarter and more intelligent way of implementing sustainable development – one that grows economies but with positive social and environmental outcomes? UNEP believes there is. Acknowledging that a Green Economy must be a people-centered economy, the WED 2012 theme is Green Economy: Does it include you? Artists Project Earth together with UNEP’s World Environment Day demonstrate that if we work together, we can help create a more just and sustainable future and a healthier planet. ‘Rhythms Del Mundo Rio+20’ brings the power of music and the arts to 21st century challenges. A better world is not just possible, it is happening now!
