There are lots of ways we can help the environment, by each of us making simple step changes every day, together we can make a real difference and be a driving force for the greater good.
Here are some ideas for changes you can make to help the environment that you may not have thought about before:
- Grow your own
Yes! Growing your own fruit and vegetables can have a positive impact on the environment! By growing your own produce you’re not using damaging pesticides and there is no need to use transportation running on harmful fossil fuels to get the food from your garden to your plate. Plus, with the rising cost of the weekly shop, you’ll probably save yourself some money too. If you’re interested in growing your own but don’t know where to begin, check out this handy advice from the Royal Horticultural Society.
- Clean-up your cleaning products
Many household cleaning products contain harmful chemicals, that can be damaging to human health and the environment. Most of them are unnecessary, you can make your own pollutant-free cleaning products using ingredients that you have in the kitchen, here are some suggestions, happy creating!
- Don’t go stir crazy for stirrers
We all grab ourselves a takeaway coffee from time-to-time (in a reusable cup of course), but how often do we use the little wooden stirrers when we add a splash of milk to our drink? There really is no need, if there’s a metal spoon available use that, otherwise just give it a little swirl and it’ll be fine. The same goes for straws, in fact, the #refusethestraw campaign is gathering great momentum!
- Plant a tree
There are many benefits of trees, improving oxygen levels, providing habitats for birds, reducing ozone levels and many more! They also look beautiful, planting a tree as a family could mark a significant occasion or simply be one in itself. Why not plant a fruit tree so you can reap the rewards for years to come?
- Spread the word!
Word of mouth is our greatest asset for tackling climate change. We all have our own agendas and reasons for wanting to change the environment for the better, share that knowledge with friends and family. Spreading the message will be the most effective way of helping the environment.
