
Despite earth tremors, radioactive water, toxic chemical cocktails and the infamous ‘flaming water-taps’ – Fracking is still being considered as part of the UK’s energy mix, with the UK government set to make a decision as to whether Cuadrilla can continue its operations in Lancashire, within weeks. But APE has recently learned that the reserves of shale gas in the UK have been vastly over-estimated, giving cause to question the industry’s mantra of cheap, abundant gas for the UK. Not only that, but data from the US has revealed that shale gas extraction only just breaks even, and has given rise to some extraordinary market mechanisms to fund the industry which are also giving rise to concerns.
